Dr. Chopra expanded his consulting practices in 2016 when he retired after a long and distinguished career at the University of California, Berkeley.  While in academia he developed and offered courses in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, and published a textbook, Dynamics of Structures: Theory & Application to Earthquake Engineering. Originally published in 1995, and now in its 5th edition, this book has been translated to Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Greek Turkish, Spanish, and Persian.

His research activities have included studies of structural dynamics, various problems in earthquake analysis and design of buildings, dynamic soil-structure interaction, dynamic fluid-structure interaction, and earthquake analysis and design of concrete dams. He has authored more than 385 published papers on his work.

While in academia, he was called upon to serve on advisory boards of governmental organizations, as a consultant on earthquake design and safety evaluation of many concrete dams and intake-outlet towers, and peer reviewer on performance-based engineering of several buildings.
